Resolutions and Goals

Happy new year!

It's that time again, the time when we all start looking back on the previous year and begin making plans for the new one. For the runners that means adding up all the miles and medals we earned in 2019 and beginning to prep for a better 2020.

Though the term New Years Resolution can sometimes be met with an almost skepticle attitude, when it comes down to it, a resolution is just a firm decision or promise to yourself to reach a new goal. And runners love setting goals!

This is the time to go buy a new calendar and start researching new races to fill up your weekends. Sign up for a new distance or try a new type of race entirely!

The prospect of a new year means new opportunities and the chance to develope new passions. Give triathlons a chance or adventure runs! Try a race that runs through the night, or a multi day event.

If you are looking to get faster in 2020, try out a new program. Get a coach or start running with a faster friend. If you want to run longer, look for a longer race to sign up for. The set date and money you pay, are great motivators!

If you are just starting out, or are trying to get more consistent, look for a couch to 5k program to follow. Join a Running Facebook group for motivation. Or start running with a local running club once or twice a week. The friends you make will keep you coming back and clubs are usually following some kind of mileage program that can help you stay on track.

Whether your goal is to run your first marathon or simply to have an injury free year, it's very helpful to acknowledge these goals and to set them early. Make them clear and realistic for where you are in your running journey. Most of all make them fun.

So here's to 2020, may your legs feel light and your pace stay strong!

-See you on the road!
